Something Sarah Loves.. Not doing New Year’s Resolutions
I do not.. repeat.. do not have any fondness for resolutions. They are so resolute. So concrete. Carved in stone.
If you haven’t figured me out yet, I am a sanguine free spirit, and any kind of rule makes me convulse, clench, pass out. But, I’m also a die hard rule follower. Weird, right! I think, because of that, I don’t want to have any more rules to follow.
Rules like showering every day, making sure the children you have been given don’t starve, not chewing with your mouth open, etc.. I’m barely managing these, so putting some more into my life would be disastrous. I might not be able to shower, or keep my mouth shut while eating.
I have enough rules, thank you very much.
Resolutions, then, feel like big weighty, start the new year off right rules to me. Something else to dictate that I’m failing in some way, should I slip up. Which I will. Rules don’t feel full of grace to me. They seem anti-grace, in fact. Even when Jesus gives us rules, boundaries, guard rails to follow, He does so with grace, knowing we will most likely fail.. loving us anyway, encouraging us to try, try, try again.
And so I try.
But I don’t make resolutions.
I do think new beginnings are much needed, however. Fresh starts and all that. And so, the Tolson’s are newly beginning to eat more home cooked, whole foods. When mamma doesn’t feel good, Dad saves the day by hunting down dinner at exotic places like In n Out, or the local taco shop. And I so appreciate not having to cook or do this dishes. But when there are areas of life that swing in the extreme one way or the other (too much fast food, for example), God will convict me about swinging the pendulum back towards the middle. Moderation, if you will.
I still need to be gluten free, but there are lots of whole foods I haven’t allowed because of some diet rule or another. We Tolsons are about freedom, with God’s boundaries within that freedom. It’s more about listening to the body God gave us, and honoring Him by honoring it.
Moving, breathing, eating real food, laughing, dancing, praying, loving, playing, serving. Try it. You might find a newly begun freedom you weren’t aware of before. 🙂
