I posted a video on the Tube a few days ago about how to prevent lice, since we were told at orientation that lice are taking over the world.
They most likely didn’t say that, but I thought it sounded more dramatic. I made the quick video to show what I do to prevent my kiddos from getting it. However, yesterday one of the kiddos came home with a “LICE ALERT” notice, which sent me into overdrive.
In the video, I talk about tea tree oil and how lice don’t like it, so if your kiddos smells like tea tree, chances are, the lice will run away from them. But, I didn’t talk about what to do if you get an alert for your child’s class. Here are a few extra steps to go along with the video..
1. As soon as the child gets home, make a really strong solution of tea tree oil/shampoo. I had my child leave it on their hair for a few minutes so the oil could soak into their hair. Word of caution… The oil “dissolves” the thickness of the shampoo, but it still works. Also, be sure to wash and rinse for younger ones so they don’t get the oil in their eyes.
2. The next morning, make sure the child has their hair up (i.e. braids, bun) and spray liberally with hairspray. Contrary to popular thought, lice like clean hair. If your child is a boy, also spray with hairspray no matter how much they complain. š
3. Take a tiny bit of the oil on a cotton ball, and surround the child’s hairline with it. This step will make them stinky. I know.. I’m sorry, but if I can prevent the epidemic from visiting my house, I will.
So the video is a great every day solution. When you get that dreaded alert notice, bump up the remedies a notch. Hope this helps!
Happy Staying Lice Free, y’all!!
